Biography
Canadian cellist Andrea Stewart is a versatile musician and curator, an artistic instigator, a dedicated educator and mentor, and a performer of historical and modern instruments. As a soloist and chamber musician she has performed across North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
Andrea is a founding member and the Associate Director of chamber ensemble collectif9 (2025 JUNO Award, 2025 Prix Opus Performer of the Year), whose innovative programmes and educational productions have been toured worldwide. She is also a member of the early music ensemble Infusion Baroque (Grand Prize and Audience Prize at the 2014 EMA Performance Competition), Andrea regularly gives workshops and masterclasses and mentors emerging professional musicians. Since 2023, she has been co-director of the chamber music course run by collectif9 at the Orford Music Academy, and since 2026 she teaches cello at the University of Sherbrooke. Committed to her community, she founded Jardin musical in 2025, a free, outdoor concert series for multi-generational audiences in Montreal. She is a member of Arion Baroque Orchestra and is regularly invited to perform with ensembles such as Space Time Continuo, Les Violons du Roy, Tafelmusik, and Innovations en concert. In 2024, Andrea was in residence at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris.
Andrea holds the degrees of Doctor of Music and Master of Music from McGill University. She has collaborated with numerous musicians and composers, including Matt Haimovitz and Uccello (nominated at the 2010 Grammy Awards), Gruppo Montebello, Avi Avital, Sara Davis Buechner, Wolfgang Redik, Dinuk Wijeratne, Mark Fewer, Luna Pearl Woolf, Nicole Lizée, Thierry De Mey and David Sanford. She was a finalist in the Golden Violin Competition (McGill University, Canada), the Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition (Canada) and the Prix d’Europe (Canada). Andrea performs on the 1824 McConnell Nicolaus Gagliano II cello, on loan from the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank.
